The Rule of Two is the core doctrine of the Sith Order, established by Darth Bane after the ancient Sith Empire destroyed itself through infighting. Bane recognized that the Sith's greatest weakness was their hunger for power turning inward.
The Rule is elegantly simple: there shall be only two Sith at any time—a master to embody power, and an apprentice to crave it. The master trains the apprentice, who must eventually surpass and kill the master. This ensures each generation grows stronger.
Bane's doctrine forced the Sith into the shadows for a thousand years. Instead of open war against the Jedi, they manipulated galactic events from behind the scenes, slowly corrupting the Republic from within. This patience allowed Darth Sidious to finally destroy the Jedi Order and become Emperor.
The Rule creates a paradox: the apprentice must be strong enough to eventually kill the master, but obedient enough to serve until that moment. Palpatine broke the Rule by taking multiple apprentices and refusing to die.
