Coruscant: The Galactic Capital
An entire planet transformed into one endless city—the beating heart of galactic civilization for millennia.
Coruscant is the political and cultural center of the galaxy, a planet-wide ecumenopolis where towering skyscrapers pierce the clouds and speeder traffic flows through thousands of levels. For over 25,000 years, it has served as the capital of galactic government—from the Old Republic to the Empire to the New Republic.
The planet's surface is entirely covered by cityscape. The upper levels, bathed in sunlight and clean air, house the Senate Building, Jedi Temple, and residences of the elite. The lower levels descend into perpetual twilight and then darkness, where sunlight never reaches and crime thrives in the industrial underbelly.
The Jedi Temple, with its five distinctive spires, stood as a beacon of the light side for millennia. After Order 66, Palpatine converted it into the Imperial Palace, a symbolic conquest of the Jedi's spiritual home. The Senate Building, a massive mushroom-shaped structure, hosted debates that shaped galactic policy—though by the Clone Wars, corruption had hollowed out its democratic ideals.
Coruscant's population numbers in the trillions, representing thousands of species from across the galaxy. The planet imports all its food and water, relying on a logistics network of staggering complexity. Despite its grandeur, Coruscant embodies the Republic's failure: wealth and power concentrated at the top, poverty and crime festering below.
**Fun Fact:** George Lucas originally wanted to call the capital planet 'Had Abbadon' but changed it to Coruscant after the name appeared in Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy.
